The Rebecca Davis Dance Company

PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH

The Rebecca Davis Dance Company has developed a unique approach to training young, pre-professional dancers. The three-part approach integrates Rebecca Davis' own experience teaching, training, and choreographing in Russia, Canada, and the United States.

Focus: Class Structure
Each and every technique class is comprised of an educational element and a performance element. The instructor teaches new steps or sequences that require an in-depth explanation of the kinesthetic movement or underlying quality. The performance element builds students' strength, flexibility, and stamina.

Focus: Long-Term Development
In today's competitive dance world, artists need to be able to adapt their movement and style to suit different choreographers' objectives. For this reason, training must reflect a continuum. At the beginning, a strong foundation in ballet technique must be built. This foundation is augmented with jazz and modern elements, and layered with acting and theory work. After this foundation is built, the dancer must learn how to utilize this technique in various choreographic settings. Consequently, the end of the training continuum focuses increasingly on abstract works, classical repertoire and creative integration.

Focus: Creativity
A professional dance artist is able to demonstrate a kinesthetic and intellectual understanding of the interrelationship between society and movement. It is difficult to develop this sensitivity in young students, but it is paramount to their future success as artists.

To foster this, part of the training focuses on work with narratives. Students bring in articles or stories they have read in the newspaper or in magazines, and develop movement that reflects these texts. At first, the process is very literal, but it becomes increasingly emotional and psychological as students discover the intrinsic connections that exist between physicality and their human environment.

These three focuses are simultaneously pursued in The Rebecca Davis Dance Company's training programs. The components are integrated in all class work and performance opportunities while students participate in the intensive dance program.
